A Guide to Laundry Hacking for Maximum Efficiency
Laundry—nobody loves doing it, but everyone has to. It's one of those necessary chores that can seem never-ending, especially in a busy household or for those who just hate the chore. However, with the right approach, you can transform your laundry from a mundane task that eats up a chunk of your weekend into a streamlined process that saves time and mental energy. This ultimate guide to laundry hacking is designed for those who love optimization, are on a quest for efficiency, and refuse to be chained to doing laundry the traditional way.
The Bin Method: Rethinking Laundry Organization
Tackling laundry can be a daunting task, particularly if you’re still using a 19th-century process to manage the mountain of clothes coming your way. This system resulted from me looking at each laundry action to eliminate or reduce steps in washing, drying, and storing clothes.
Step 1: Allocated Bins
The first step in the Bin Method is to allocate bins for different types of clothes. Think of which items you never mind getting a little squished or wrinkled. For me, this means long socks, short socks, underwear, daily wear T-shirts, base layers, workout tops, and workout bottoms. These bins should be easily accessible in your closet or bedroom, each marked for its designated clothing type. I personally keep these in a short cubby box shelfing unit in my room. When it comes to sorting clothes and pull the cubbies out and just throw clothes into the appropriate bin.
Step 2: Closet Space for Certain Items
The second step is to free up space in your closet for those items that truly need it. This includes dressier wear, pants, and any items that should really never see the interior of a bin. By prioritizing what goes on hangers, you’re ensuring these items are kept in their best shape for longer. I hang dress/collared shirts and sweaters, and fold and lay pants and shorts. My folding your pants, you can easily see them all and choose what you like.
Step 3: Hang Like a Minimalist
Resist the urge to keep every T-shirt from your university days in circulation. Adopt the mindset of a minimalist when it comes to your wardrobe, and you'll find laundry day gets a lot less painful. Not to mention, it's easier to do that when you've already set limits on how many items you can 'bin'. I would personally choose a cotton t-shit that you like and buy a bunch of the same to use as daily wear. They can all go into the same bin. You may buy multiple large packs of the same socks that is suitable for you to wear daily. They are all the same so you do not have to waste time sorting through /matching them.
Step 4: Basket for Distribution
Invest in a durable, good-looking laundry basket that will serve as the last stop for your clean laundry before it’s distributed into the bins. Make sure it’s large enough to handle your household's laundry output, but also make it appealing enough to keep it in a main living area if needed.
Step 5: Execution
With your bins, closet space, and distribution basket set up, it's time to implement the system. Laundry day should become more about quick and efficient sorting and distributing, rather than laborious, multi-step tasks. The Bin Method focuses on simplifying and standardizing the process, making every stage more efficient, from gathering dirty clothes to putting away the clean laundry.
“I try to focus on wearing the clothing that go into bins”
I throw my dirty clothes directly into the washer. When full or its laundry time, after the wash cycle the clothes go to dry, then into the clean bin, then transferred to the various bins, then I hang and fold the remaining items. It takes very little time, particularly when I try to focus on wearing the clothing that go into bins, and as few as possible. You can always fold the shirts if you like, and since they are all the same, stacking them wont be an issue.
By using this method, you're essentially creating a factory line for your laundry. The clothes go straight from the washer to the dryer to the distribution basket, to the sorted bins, to being worn and back into the washer; a streamlined process.
Embracing the Bin Method for Maximum Effectiveness
Laundry is an aspect of life that we can’t avoid, but with the Bin Method, we can certainly control it. You may not think this method is suited for you, perhaps too "primitive", but if we truly care about focusing on growth in the aspects of life we value, we need to ruthlessly cut the time spent on chores. Forget about trying to fit into what you think is expected of you, follow your own path with your own rules. Make time for what is really important to you, eliminate the rest. Here are several tips for fully implementing this system and making it a fixture in your life.
Rely on Quality Products
Using high-quality laundry detergent at the correct measurements, a reliable washer and dryer, and appropriate water temperatures and settings can extend the life of your clothes and help ensure that they’re always in the best condition for wearing.
Troubleshoot and Adjust
No system is perfect from day one. Expect to adjust the organization of your bins, the location of your distribution basket, or whatever else you need, to find the optimal balance for your household's needs.
The Benefits of the Bin Method
By implementing the Bin Method, you're not just making laundry day less of a chore; you're also reaping long-term benefits that can positively affect your quality of life.
Time and Energy Savings
The Bin Method is all about saving time and energy. By reducing the manual handling of clothes and the need to carefully hang or fold all garments on laundry day, you’ll shave precious hours off this dreaded task, giving you more time to do the things that contribute to your success, health and happiness.
Space and Storage Optimization
By housing clean clothes in the bins and only hanging what’s necessary, you’ll optimize your closet space and the organization of your wardrobe. No more fights for hanger real estate between items that simply don’t need it.
Reduced Decision Fatigue
With less clothing crowding your closet and a clear process for managing your laundry, you’ll experience a reduction in decision fatigue. Selecting outfits becomes simpler and more enjoyable, as your wardrobe is populated only with the items you love and wear regularly.
